LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Samantha Klupchak scored three times to garner Player of the Game honors as Southeast Division Champion/No. 15-ranked Florida State University edged North Atlantic Division Champion/No. 14 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 10-9, in a 13th/15th place game at the 2023 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of California-Los Angeles.

Playing at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center, the Seminoles tie for 13th place and the Engineers tie for 15th as the 13th and 15th place games in the 16-team championship tournament are not played out due to a lack of facility time.

Florida State – which previously finished in 13th place as the host institution for the 2015 Women’s National College Club Championship – fell behind in the first quarter as MIT’s Shannon Moreno converted a man-up chance with 5:24 on the clock to stake the Engineers to a 1-0 lead.

The Seminoles pulled ahead in the second quarter as Lindsey Chessman (4:08, man-up), Khloe Riordan (2:07, man-up) and Samantha Klupchak (1:20, man-up) ticked off a trio of power-play scores to provide FSU a 3-1 lead.

Moreno cut Florida State’s lead down to a single goal prior to the conclusion of the first half as she drilled in a shot with 57 seconds to go in the second quarter to move the Engineers within one at 3-2.

Moreno balanced the scoreboard to start the third quarter by putting a shot into the twine at 5:41 prior to Sophie Reynolds returning the Engineers to the lead at 4:28.  Samantha Klupchak responded for Florida State at 3:33 via a penalty shot , but Moreno completed a hat-trick at 2:10 to provide the Engineers another one goal lead at 5-4.

Samantha Klupchak pulled Florida State even at five-all (1:41), Amanda Jackson pushed MIT back ahead (1:21) and River Hastings delivered an equalizer for the Seminoles (1:06) to knot the contest at six-all.

In the fourth quarter, Jackson provided MIT another one-goal lead by cashing in on a man-up chance at 4:50, but Chessman notched a tying strike at 4:32.

MIT continued to acquire one goal leads and give them back over the next three minutes as Jackson (3:18; 2:41) was matched by Jackie Klupchak at both 3:02 and1:52 to make it a nine-all game.

Medley Bohn delivered the deciding factor with 1:01 left in regulation as she accounted for the game-winning goal to allow Florida State to escape with a 10-9 win.

Moreno and Jackson led MIT with four goals, while Reynolds put away one shot.  Mak Kirkman-Davis made three saves in taking the loss.
