POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 14-ranked Princeton University Tigers earned a split during the final day of the Marist College Invitational by dropping an 11-10 decision to the No. 19 Wagner College Seahawks and defeating the Siena College Saints, 20-10.
Against Wagner, Amy Castellano‘s goal with 34 seconds left in the first quarter tied the contest at two-all. Knotted at three-all, Wagner registered the next two goals before Princeton managed to tie the game for a fourth time (5-5) with 44 seconds to go in the first half. Wagner took a 6-5 lead into the intermission.
The Seahawks picked up three of the first four tallies of the second half jumping in front, 9-6, at the 4:42 mark. Princeton rallied, tying the game at nine-all as Laura Larkin scored right before the buzzer as the third quarter ended.
Castellano retied the matchup for a sixth time (10-10) with a tally with 5:14 left, but Wagner’s Erica Hardy produced the game-winner less than a minute later.
Marissa Webb made 10 saves for Princeton in taking the loss.
Facing Siena, each team had its own three-goal outburst before Larkin’s tally with 42 seconds to go in the first quarter put Princeton ahead, 4-3, after eight minutes. The Tigers held a 6-5 advantage before four consecutive tallies put them in front, 10-5, at the 1:19 mark of the second frame. Head coach Derek Ellingson‘s group took an 11-6 lead into the break.
After Siena put up the first tally of the second half, the Tigers ran off three straight, doubling up the Saints, 14-7, with 3:42 remaining in the third stanza. Princeton registered 20 goals for the second time this season and just the 11th time in program history.
