CARLISLE, Pa. — Player of the Game Brooke Henry (So., Hudsonville, Mich.) scored with 2:04 and 1:24 left in the fourth quarter to break an eight-all tie as No. 15-ranked/No. 7 position/Midwest Division Champion Grand Valley State University overcame No. 16/No. 10 position/Mid-Atlantic Division Champion Pennsylvania State University in the opening round of the 2026 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted at the Carlisle YMCA Aquatic Center.
The victory advances the Lakers into the tournament quarterfinals where GVSU will face fellow Great Lakes State institution No. 1/No. 2 position/Big Ten Division Champion the University of Michigan at 11:20 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, April 18, for a spot in the semifinals.
Penn State drops into the consolation side of the 16-team, 30-game championship bracket as the Nittany Lions will clash with No. 18/No. 15 position/New York Division Champion Cornell University – which fell to Michigan by a 24-0 score earlier in the day – at 8:45 p.m. later tonight.
Penn State appeared primed to run away with the contest in the early going as Adi Garges (Jr., Perkasie, Pa.) and Faith Pigeon (So., Blue Bell, Pa.) fired in strikes at the 6:40 and 5:58 marks of the first quarter, respectively, to acquire a 2-0 lead. Sophia Gaier (Fr., New Lenox, Ill.) put Grand Valley State on the scoreboard with 1:12 left in the frame courtesy a penalty shot to cut PSU’s lead in half prior to Pigeon converting a man-up opportunity with 31 seconds left on the clock for a 3-1 Nittany Lions’ lead at the conclusion of the quarter.
Gaier answered again for the Lakers by denting the twine via a penalty shot with 5:49 until halftime and Pigeon completed a hat-trick at 3:57 prior to Jenna Kuiper (Sr., Hudsonville, Mich.) (3:02) and Gaier (2:23, man-up) pumping in back-to-back strikes for Grand Valley to knot the contest at four-all entering the break.
The tide turned after halftime as Kuiper (5:27) gave Grand Valley its inaugural lead at 5-4 before Pigeon posted an equalizer at 5:10 to tie the teams at five-all in the third quarter. Kuiper struck again at 4:52 for a 6-5 margin before Nora Magers (Fr, Forest Hills, Mich.) widened the gap to 7-5 at the 2:06 mark as the Lakers entered the concluding seven minutes of regulation clutching a two-goal lead.
Garges (5:30) and Pigeon (4:37) leveled the teams in the fourth quarter at seven-all to raise the possibility of overtime. Kuiper (4:18) put GVSU back in front at 8-7 and Molly Goodman (So., Harleysville, Pa.) squared the squads at eight-all (3:46, man-up) to set the stage for Henry’s heroics.
The sophomore notched back-to-back strikes at 2:04 and 1:24 to put Grand Valley ahead to stay prior to Pigeon (37 seconds) pumping in her sixth goal of the afternoon for a 10-9 final score.
For Penn State, Pigeon (six), Garges (two) and Goodman accounted for the entirety of the Nittany Lions’ offensive output with goalkeeper Juliana Carter (So., Aurora, Ill.) stopping six shots in suffering the loss between the pipes.
Kuiper (four), Gaier (three), Henry (two) and Magers combined for GVSU’s 10 goals to support a 12 save performance by netminder Elsie Roberts (Jr., Hudsonville, Mich.).
