BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Player of the Game Jennifer Beadle (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) buried a quartet of tallies and Kelly Matthews (Jr., Roxboro, Quebec/St. Thomas) chipped in a pair as No. 16-ranked Indiana University closed out its 2017 season with a 14-9 defeat of Bucknell University in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship Fifth Place game at home in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

It marks the fourth time Indiana has finished fifth at the CWPA Championship as the team previously garnered First (2003, 2011, 2014), Second (2005, 2010, 2015, 2016), Third (2002, 2004, 2007, 2013), Fifth (2006, 2009, 2012), Sixth (2001) and Seventh (2008) Place conclusions to the league season.

The Hoosiers (21-11, 8-4 CWPA) never trailed in the game as the squad opened up a 2-0 lead on the scoring and passing strength of Beadle.  The junior assisted Sarah Young (Jr., San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) on the ice-breaker with 6:17 on the first quarter clock prior to polishing off a helper from Mollie Williams (Fr., Sydney, Australia/Meriden) at 5:39.

Bucknell (14-18, 3-8 CWPA) cut its deficit in half prior to the conclusion of the opening quarter of play as Tegan Stanbach (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif./Saint Francis) ripped in a tally at 2:34 to put the Bison within one at 2-1.

However, Indiana responded to Stanbach’s strike with five of their own in the first four minutes of the second quarter as Matthews swished a man-up chance (7:43) before Williams (7:03) and Joelle Nacouzi (Fr., Montreal, Quebec/College Charlemagne) (6:32) followed with even-strength markers to build the lead to 5-1.  Beadle and Matthews capped off the mini-run by polishing off passes from Bronwyn Smith (Sr., Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and Nacouzi at 4:39 and 4:14, respectively, to give the home team a nearly insurmountable 7-1 lead.

Stanbach snapped the run at 3:54 by putting away her second goal of the contest to pull Bucknell within five at 7-2, but Matthews laced in a five-meter penalty shot at 3:36 to return the lead to six at 8-2.

Bucknell was able to climb slightly out of its hole in the waning moments of the first half as Emily Konishi (So., Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) cashed in for an unassisted goal at 3:05 prior to feeding Sarah Mooney (So., Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) as the Bison converted a six-on-five chance at 2:13.  The pair of markers surrounded a strike by Beadle at 2:50 as the teams went to their corners for halftime with Indiana holding a 9-4 lead.

Williams and Beadle engineered the lead to 11-4 within the first 2:03 of the second half as the duo drove in shots at the 6:49 and 5:47 marks, respectively.  Stanbach completed a hat-trick at 5:38 to minimize the gap to 11-5, but Sarah Myers (Jr., Toronto, Ontario/Humberside) delivered the Hoosiers’ response with 5:08 on the clock and Indiana holding a six-on-five advantage in the water.

The teams continued to trade scoring shots over the remainder of the third quarter as Konishi found Colleen Barron (Jr, Darien, Ill./Fenwick) for a power-play conversion at 3:56 prior to Emily Powell (Fr., Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Girls Grammar School) hitting Myers for an even-strength strike at 3:10 to make it a 13-6 game.

Konishi shrank the gap back to six prior to the end of the third quarter as she notched an advantage score with 2:11 on the clock to set the scoreboard at 13-7.

Young finished a pass from Wiliams at 7:40 of the fourth quarter to conclude Indiana’s scoring before Barron (4:44) and Stanbach (2:54) ticked off back-to-back natural goals for the Bison in establishing the 14-9 final score.

For Indiana, Young, Myers and Williams both contributed pairs of scores to join Beadle and Matthews in posting multi-goal games.  Nacouzi accounted for the Hoosiers’ other marker while Davis Simmons (Fr., Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) earned the victory with five saves.

Stanbach led the way for Bucknell with four goals with Konishi (two), Barron (two) and Mooney also finding the back of the cage.  Manuela Herrera (Jr., Windermere, Fla./Olympia) took the loss with nine saves in 27:39 before Haley Derrod (Sr., Bonita, Calif./Eastlake) came on to make one stop in the final 4:21.

It marks the third time the Bison have finished in Sixth Place at the CWPA Championship as the team previously recorded fourth (2006), fifth (2010, 2016), sixth (2008, 2014), seventh (2004, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015), eighth (2003, 2012), ninth (2000) and 11th (2002) marks.
