LA JOLLA, Calif. — The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team closed play at the University of California-San Diego’s Triton Invitational with an 11-5 victory over No. 14 the University of California-Davis at Canyonview Pool. Senior Maddy Scarth and sophomore Ari Karampetsou combined for seven goals, while Sophia Bunnell recorded 13 saves to lead the Wolverines in claiming at Ninth Place finish in the 16-team tournament’s standings.
Lulu Hirschfield opened the scoring for Michigan, followed shortly after by Karampetsou to give the Wolverines an early advantage. Tied at two-all entering the second quarter, Karampetsou scored twice more to complete a hat trick just over 10 minutes into the contest. Issy Jackson responded after an Aggies’ goal with her lone tally of the day before Scarth found the net on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead.
Scarth continued her offensive surge to open the second half, scoring to give Michigan a four-goal cushion. The Wolverines pulled away over the final two quarters, limiting UC-Davis to just one second-half goal while adding three more scores, including one from Karampetsou and a pair courtesy Kaia Levenfeld.
