ARLINGTON, Va./WASHINGTON, D.C. — No. 19-ranked George Washington University opened its 2025 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) slate of games by defeating Bucknell University, 15-13, and Mercyhurst University, 18-10, on Saturday, September 27, at Long Bridge Park, before earning a 19-13 victory over Mount St. Mary’s University on campus at the Smith Center. GW improves to 7-8 overall and 3-0 in MAWPC competition.
The Revolutionaries trailed for most of their MAWPC opener against the Bison from Bucknell. However, GW locked in late to overtake the Bison in the fourth quarter.
GW was trailing at the end of the first, second and third quarters, but the Buff & Blue scored six times in the fourth quarter while holding Bucknell to just three goals to secure a 15-13 win.
Antonio Florena paced George Washington with four goals, while Andrea Forno and Adonis Vlassis contributed three goals apiece.
The Revolutionaries stormed out of the gate in their second game against the Mercyhurst Lakers to take a 7-1 lead in the first quarter. Despite play leveling out from that point, GW’s lead was comfortable throughout as the Revolutionaries claimed rolled to an eight-goal win.
Forno led the efforts on offense with six goals and one assist. Yam Kabakov had the second-most points in the outing with two goals and three assists.
On Sunday, September 28, back in Washington. D.C. against Mount St. Mary’s, George Washington came out slow versus the Mountaineers to stand deadlocked at three-all after eight minutes of action.
However, GW picked up the pace in the second quarter to command a 9-4 lead at the halfway point. GW kept Mount St. Mary’s at arm’s reach for the rest of the match, holding a minimum of a five-goal lead through the final 16 minutes.
Vlassis and Florena had four goals apiece, while Vlassis also added a match-high four assists. Forno had a pair of goals with five exclusions drawn.
