PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Nicole Ryder (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) scored four times to earn Player of the Game laurels as No. 2-ranked/Southwest Division Champion San Diego State University used six and eight goal outbursts in the first and third quarters to overpower No. 5/Florida Division Champion the University of Central Florida, 19-11, in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool.
Courtesy the win, SDSU earns a spot in the tournament semifinals where the Aztecs will clash with No. 3/Pacific Coast Division Champion California Polytechnic State University at 6:20 p.m. this evening with a berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship title game at stake. Cal Poly made the semifinals by taking care of No. 19/New England Division Champion Dartmouth College by an 18-3 count in the day’s opening game.
San Diego State never trailed against the Lady Knights of UCF by opening up a 2-0 lead on the way to margins of 6-1 and 8-3 by the conclusion of the first and second quarters, respectively. The lead continued to balloon in the third quarter as San Diego State outscored Central Florida 8-2 to rack-up a 16-5 margin by the end of the frame prior to UCF outscoring the victors 6-3 in the fourth quarter to shave the final margin of defeat down to eight goals.
For SDSU, Marissa Wyan (Fr., Merced, Calif.) and Kayla McGowan (Jr., Dana Point, Calif.) joined Ryder in posting hat-tricks with Briana Vazquez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.), Jessica Gonsalves (So., San Ramon, Calif.) and Kelli Boling (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) posting pairs of strikes. Erin Fink (Gr., San Diego, Calif.), Colleen Boensel (So., Salinas, Calif.) and Marissa Vargas (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) each found the back of the cage once as nine different Aztecs lit up the scoreboard.
Montana Jackson (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) earned the victory with four saves with nine goals allowed in 26:13 prior to being relieved by Jennafer Schoonover (Fr., Fairfield, Calif.) who permitted two scores with no saves over the final 1:47.
Alicia Emerine (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) keyed the Lady Knights’ attack with a hat-trick. Katie Britton (Jr., Lawrencebury, Tenn.) and Dakota Porter (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) finished pairs of chances, while Maddie Porter (Jr., Orlando, Fla.), Casey Burke (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif.), Lauren Olinger (So., Michigan City, Ind.) and Jessica Robinson (So., St. Louis, Mo.) each accumulated single tallies.
Cheyenne Porter (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) took the loss with six saves.
Central Florida will next be in action at 4:00 p.m. against Dartmouth to decide if either the Lady Knights or Big Green make the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship Fifth Place game.
