BLOOMINGTON, Ind.Marisa Kolokotronis (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) scored five times to accompany a hat-trick by Jessica Heilman (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo Atherton) as the No. 25-ranked Brown University Bears picked up a 12-3 defeat of Saint Francis University in the 2017 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship Seventh Place game at Indiana University’s Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

It marks the third time overall, and second consecutive year, that Brown (21-10, 5-7 CWPA) finishes in Seventh Place at the league championship tournament following First (2001), Second (2003), Fourth (2004, 2009, 2012), Fifth (2000, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015), Sixth (2002, 2010), Seventh (2005, 2016) and Ninth (2011) place marks dating back to the first season of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) varsity women’s water polo in 2001.

The Bears dominated the first half of the game to build a margin which Saint Francis (11-22, 1-11 CWPA) proved unable to overcome in the second half.

Heilman put the Bears on the board 38 seconds into the game as she swept in a natural goal with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter to make it a 1-0 game.  The Red Flash responded 21 second later when Kelly Fehr (Fr., Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) tucked away a tally at 7:01 to deadlock the teams for the last time at one-all.

Brown then took command of the contest as Alison Woo (So., Arcadia, Calif./Polytechnic School) punched in a score prior with 1:04 until the conclusion of the first quarter to provide the Bears a 2-1 lead.

The ursine put to rest any doubts about the eventual outcome courtesy a 4-0 scoring spurt in the second quarter.  Kolokotronis ignite the run by burying a man-up feed from Player of the Game Shannon Crowley (Sr., Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) at the 7:06 mark prior to Crowley unleashing a cannon-like penalty shot with 5:05 on the clock to make it 4-1.  Kolokotronis found the cage at 1:54 and Heilman converted on a six-on-five chance off a helper from McKenna Miller (So., Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) at 5:04 to inflate the lead to 6-1 heading into halftime.

Brown continued to pour it on in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter as Kolokotronis added to her season stats by dishing out the assist on an power-play point by Carmen Rosas (So., Schaumburg, Ill./James B. Conant) in making the score 7-1 with 7:37 remaining in the third eight-minute frame of the contest.

Emily Wickenheiser (Fr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) snapped the Bears’ scoring run 34 seconds later by drilling in a man-up chance at 7:03 to close Saint Francis within 7-2.

However, back-to-back-to-back goals spanning the 4:14 mark of the third quarter to the 4:42 mark of the fourth quarter would spell doom for the Red Flash. Miller put away an assist from Woo at 4:14 of the third quarter prior to Kolokotronis and Heilman, off an assist from Rosas, registering natural markers at 6:22 and 4:42 of the fourth quarter to provide Brown a 10-2 lead.

Argentina Bonilla (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif./Birmingham/LA Valley College) erased one point off the Red Flash’s deficit at 4:18 by finishing a feed from Mel Aghazarian (Jr., Glendale, Calif./Glendale/LA Valley College), but Kolokotronis did the rest in swishing consecutive unassisted opportunities at 3:50 and 2:29 for the 12-3 final score.

For Brown, Rosas, Crowley, Miller and Wood combined for five goals to equal the offensive output of Kolokotronis.  Marisol Dakan (Jr., Pasadena, Calif./La Salle) earned the victory in cage with four saves in 28:10 of work.  Lauren Burns (Fr., Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) finished out the contest with three saves and one goal allowed in the final 3:50 of action.

Saint Francis received single goals from Fehr, Wickenheiser and Bonilla in support of a 12-save losing effort by Red Flash netminder Kate Wilke (Fr., Burbank, Calif./Burroughs).
