LORETTO, Pa. — Host/No. 25-ranked Saint Francis University split a pair of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I league games as the Red Flash fell to No. 7 the University of Michigan, 13-5, and came back to take down Mount St. Mary’s University, 18-7.
The Wolverines took the early lead as they jumped out 4-0 after the first quarter. SFU got on the board with a Taylor Halbauer goal to make it 8-1 at halftime. U-M continued their run notching two more in the third quarter. but not before the Red Flash struck back with three finding the back of the net to make the score 10-4 heading into the final quarter. SFU was only able to tally one more and Michigan notched three more to take the win, 13-5.
Halbauer was the top scorer of the game with two finding the back of the net.
Sophomores Haiden Lang, Addison Williams and Abbie Carter each notched a goal to round out the scoring for SFU.
Sophomore Heather Jacobson started in front of the net and split time as junior Rosalinda Rivera took over for the second half
Jacobson tallied four saves in here 16 minutes of play. Rivera as well saved four goals in the matchup against the Wolverines.
In the second game, Saint Francis handed Mount St. Mary’s their second loss of the day and 11th on the season thus far.
SFU jumped out to an early commanding lead, taking a five-goal lead, 6-1, at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Red Flash defense brought the heat as they kept the Mount scoreless in the second quarter, and jumped ahead with a five-goal run, to an 11-1 score heading into halftime.
Mount St. Mary’s added three but not before SFU found the back of the cage five more times to make it 16-4 after the third quarter. The Red Flash sealed the deal adding two more goals and the Mountaineers adding three to give SFU an 18-7 win.
Six different Red Flash players notched a goal in the matchup against the Mountaineers
Rivera notched a goal on senior day and joined sophomore Haley Sanko in splitting time between the pipes for SFU.
Freshman Emese Szucs was the leading scorer for the Red Flash with five against the Mountaineers, while freshman Jenna Handali notched four. Halbauer and Madeleine Voss also netted hat-tricks with three strikes. Williams completed SFU’s scorers with a pair.
