No. 3 University of Michigan-vs.-No. 10 Pennsylvania State University Scoresheet (2022 National Collegiate Club Championship – Game #13)

NEWBERG, Ore. — Ryan McLaughlin (So., Blue Bell, Pa.) posted a game-high eight goals for No. 10-ranked/Mid-Atlantic Division Champion Pennsylvania State University, but No. 3/Big Ten Division Champion the University of Michigan received scoring from seven athletes as the Wolverines topped the Nittany Lions, 16-14, in a quarterfinal clash at the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Oregon State University.

Competing at the Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center, Michigan punches its ticket into the semifinals and a guaranteed Top Four finish at the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship.  Historically, the Maize & Blue have been a consistent presence among the Top 10 teams with prior National Championship (1996, 1998, 2003), Fourth (2004, 2016), Fifth (2015), Seventh (2017), Eighth (2018) and Ninth (2011, 2012) Place finishes.

Michigan will return to the water at 5:10 p.m. Pacific later today against the victor of a quarterfinal pitting the Golden Bears of No. 4/Sierra Pacific Division Champion the University of California and the Tritons of No. 2/Southwest Division Champion the University of California-San Diego.

Due to the loss, Penn State –  which holds prior runner-up (1998), Seventh (2016), Eighth (2014), 10th (2009, 2015, 2017), 11th (2012) and 12th (2005) Place marks at the National Collegiate Club Championship – will take on the loser of the California/UC-San Diego game at 4:00 p.m. Pacific with a spot in the Fifth Place game on the line. 

Tied at four-all after the first quarter, the Wolverines outscored Penn State, 6-4, in the second quarter to acquire a 10-8 lead entering halftime.  The Maize & Blue never trailed in the second half building its lead to 15-11 by the conclusion of the third quarter and surviving a 3-1 Nittany Lions’ surge in the fourth quarter to hang on for a 16-14 win.

For Michigan, Jeffrey Brill (Sr., Okemos, Mich.) and Zach Burns (Sr., Rockford, Mich.) both connected on four shots, while Sean Underwood (Jr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Lute Smith (So., Boston, Mass.) deposited three and two markers, respectively.  Andrew Golin (Gr., Dexter, Mich.), Viktor Vondrasek (Jr., Katovice, Czech Republic) and Cliff Leveque (Jr., Lansing, Mich.) each put away solo markers to complete the Maize & Blue’s scoring.

In cage, Garrett Kaufmann (Gr., Mount Kisco, N.Y.) turned aside eight shots to earn the win for Michigan.  Evan Mancini (Jr., Lansdale, Pa.) also made eight saves in taking the loss for Penn State.

McLaughlin accounted for over half of PSU’s scoring and was joined on the stat sheet by Jake Berring (Sr., Ambler, Pa.) who contributed four goals.  Ethan Lionetti (Sr., Perkasie, Pa.) and Kerem Tan Kocylidrim (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) chipped in single tallies.
