CAMBRIDGE, Mass./PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The No. 7-ranked Princeton University women’s water polo team was joking on April Fool’s Day in taking care of Bucknell University, 20-4, and Saint University, 17-8, in a split Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I doubleheader at Harvard University and Brown University.
Facing the Bison of Bucknell at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., the Tigers ran out to an early lead with eight of the first nine goals and led 12-4 at halftime. Princeton pitched a shutout in the second half and held the Bison without a goal for 16:18 of game action to secure an impressive victory.
Princeton had 11 different scorers in the game including Shanna Davidson and Jovana Sekulic who netted hat-tricks (thre goals). Kayla Yelensky, Kate Mallery, Rachael Carver, Genevieve Fraipont and Kaila Carroll all chipped in pairs, while Laura Larkin, Cici Stewart, Sophie Johnson and Annie Robinson notched solo markers.
Lindsey Lucas earned the win with 15 saves.
Against Saint Francis at Brown in Providence, R.I., Princeton did not allow a goal in the first stanza to claim a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers went on to score six more times in the second quarter and led 10-2 after 16 minutes as the team cruised to a nine-goal win.
Sekulic led the way for Princeton with four goals, while Yelensky (two), Robinson (two), Carroll (two) and Johnson (two) also posted multi-score games. Carver, Mallery, Stewart, Davidson and Robinson each tacked on single tallies
