LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Southwest Division runner-up/No. 7-ranked San Diego State University exploited 6-2 and 10-7 scoring advantages in the first and second halves, respectively, to outmatch Southeast Division Champion/No. 15 Florida State University, 16-9, in the 11th and final game on Day 1 of the 2023 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship.
Competing at the University of California-Los Angeles’ Spieker Aquatics Center, the Aztecs never trailed versus the Seminoles. Due to the win, SDSU advances to a 12:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, May 7, at the Park Pool against Rocky Mountain Division Champion/No. 17 the University of Colorado with a spot in the ninth place game on Sunday, May 7, at stake.
The loss drops Florida State into a terminal 13th/15th place game against North Atlantic Division Champion/No. 14 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday, May 6.
San Diego State wasted little time in taking the lead as Player of the Game Jordan Wagner (5:26) and Emily Maddox (3:12) sliced in shots in the first four minutes of competition to provide the Aztecs with a 2-0 margin. Khloe Riordan cut her team’s deficit in half with a man-up marker (2:28), but Silke Tuyls answered at 2:14 for SDSU to return the lead to a pair at 3-1 exiting the opening quarter of competition.
Riordan struck again 33 seconds into the second quarter by lining in a natural goal at the 6:27 mark to once again shrink San Diego State’s lead down to one at 3-2. However, the Aztecs went on the warpath as Wagner whirled in even-strength (3:21) and man-up (2:06) chances before Tuyls made it a 6-2 game with 46 seconds left in the first half.
Following intermission, San Diego State returned to further inflate its lead as Tuyls put away shots with 6:44 and 5:58 on the third quarter clock to make it an 8-2 contest.
Lindsey Chessman made the game interesting over the next two and a half minutes by torching the Aztecs cage with scoring strikes at 5:44, 3:47 and 3:21 to close the gap between the teams to 8-5.
San Diego State answered Chapman’s back-to-back-to-back goals with a trio of their own as Tuyls (3:03), Wagner (2:20, man-up) and Maddox (1:42) combined on a run to return the lead to six at 11-5.
The difference between the teams on the scoreboard shrank to five goals (12-7) by the conclusion of the third quarter as Chessman (39 seconds, one second) sandwiched a score by Isabel Galbo wiith 19 seconds left in the frame to move Florida State within striking distance.
San Diego State, however, put the game out of reach in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter as Wagner (6:01), Maddox (5:15, man-up) and Halina Santos (4:35) padded the Aztecs’ lead to 15-7. Samantha Klupchak snapped the scoring streak a 4:22 before Haley Darr (2:19) and Klupchak (50 seconds) capped off the game with strikes to establish the 16-9 finale.
For Florida State, Chessman led the way with five goals. Klupchak and Riordan both contributed pairs to go along with six saves from netminder Tessa Waterman.
San Diego State received multi-goal games from Wagner (five), Tuyls (five) and Maddox (three). Galbo, Santos and Darr tacked on single scores to support a six save effort by winning goalkeeper Roisin McMullen.
