SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 19-ranked Harvard University suffered a narrow 13–12 defeat to the No. 7 University of the Pacific men’s water polo team during the first day of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament at No. 17 Santa Clara University.
Battling back, the Crimson trailed by three goals twice before coming back to knot the game each time. With the score tied at 10-all late, the Tigers were able to net three goals in just over two minutes to regain a three-goal lead. Jack Burghardt and Tyler Hogan both scored with less than a minute and a half to go to cut the deficit to one, but the Tigers held on to elude the Crimson for a one-goal victory.
Connor Kim netted a highlight-reel goal during Harvard’s second- and third-quarter outburst to help the Crimson tie and eventually take the lead in the second half. Pal, from essentially no angle, picked a corner to tie the game before Burghardt gave Harvard its first lead.
Hogan finished with two goals, while Lukas Peabody scored once and added an assist.
Burghardt found the back of the net four times and Vilas Sogaard-Srikrishnan added one goal and four assists for a five-point outing.
Tanner Furtak made nine saves in taking the loss.
