GRESHAM, Ore. — Emily Argentati (Jr., Reading, Pa.) notched a hat-trick with three goals to claim Player of the Game status as Mid-Atlantic Division Champion/No. 8-ranked Pennsylvania State University handled Rocky Mountain Division Champion the University of Colorado, 10-4, in the consolation round of the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Washington at the Mt. Hood Community College.
Via the victory, Penn State, which previously suffered a 12-7 setback against the host/Northwest Division Champion/No. 6 Huskies of Washington, advances to a 2:50 p.m. Pacific/5:50 p.m. Eastern game against North Atlantic Division Championship runner-up Wellesley College on Saturday, May 5, with a spot in the 2018 National Collegiate Club Championship Ninth Place game on the line.
Colorado, which dropped a 14-0 game to Pacific Coast Division Champion/No. 2 California Polytechnic State University in the opening round, will take on Heartland Division Champion Grinnell College at 9:50 p.m. Pacific/12:50 a.m. Eastern on May 5/6 in a 13th/15th Place game. A loss by the Buffaloes will cause the team to tie for 15th place, while a win will provide Colorado a tie for 13th place as the No. 13-to-16 spots in the championship field are not played out due to limited time.
The Nittany Lions never trailed in turning back the Buffaloes as Argentati put away the only goal of the first quarter via a volley with 1:17 remaining to stake PSU to a lead it would never relinquish at 1-0.
In the second quarter, Claire Washabaugh (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) put way natural goals at the 4:17 and 2:36 marks to sandwich an even-strength marker by Argentati (3:31) to build Penn State’s lead to 4-0. Claire Morrison (So., Burlingame, Calif.) broke up a shutout bid by PSU goalie Sofia Viebranz (So., Erie, Pa.) by hitting the twine with 1:18 until halftime, but the Nittany Lions got the goal back prior to the break as Claire Beno (Fr., Perkasie, Pa.) snapped off a strike with 21 ticks on the clock to make it a 5-1 game.
Colorado attempted to start a comeback in the dawning moments of the second half as Madison Lampe (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) put away a man-up score with 4:59 remaining in the third quarter to move within 5-2. However, a power-play conversion by Shannon Quinn (So., Hatfield, Pa.) at 3:22 followed by a five-meter penalty shot from Beno at 2:20 snuffed out the spark of a rally and placed Penn State comfortably in front at 7-2 entering the fourth quarter of play.
Following a goal by Argentati with 5:49 remaining in regulation to widen the gap to 8-2, Colorado tried one final comeback attempt as Caroline Aemmer (So., Naperville, Ill.) took advantage of a six-on-five chance to move the Buffaloes within 8-3 with 5:10 on the clock.
Once again, Penn State put an abrupt end to any rally tries as Quinn quashed the run with back-to-back even-strength goals (4:59, 3:39) to set the score at 10-3 before Ashley Fedler (Jr., Murrieta, Calif.) put away a man-up opportunity for Colorado with 28 seconds remaining to solidify the 10-4 final score.
For PSU, Argentati and Quinn both finished with hat-tricks to accompany pairs by Washabaugh and Beno. Viebranz picked up the win between the pipes with six saves.
On the other end of the pool, Morrison, Fedler, Aemmer and Lampe each scored once. Goalie Madeleine Morgan (So., Mill Valley, Calif.) took the loss with seven saves.
