No. 9 Princeton University-vs.-Bucknell University FOSH Boxscore

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Player of the Game Lindsey Kelleher (So., South Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic) and Haley Wan (Jr., Irvine, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) both notched hat-tricks, while Olympic Gold Medalist goalie Ashleigh Johnson (Sr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) made 16 saves as the No. 9-ranked Tigers of Princeton University bested Bucknell University, 16-7, in the opening round of the 2017 CWPA Championship at Indiana University’s Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Princeton (23-3, 8-1 CWPA) never trailed by opening up a 5-0 lead in the first quarter prior to carrying a 9-2 lead into halftime to cap off a dominating first half which the Bison of Bucknell (13-17, 2-7 CWPA) were unable to overcome.

Courtesy the victory, the Tigers advance into the tournament semifinals at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, where Princeton is guaranteed to square off a fellow nationally-ranked team/the victor of a first round matchup pitting No. 15 Hartwick College-vs.-No. 25 Brown University.  Bucknell falls into the consolation side of the bracket and will clash with the fallen from the Hawks-vs.-Bears showdown at Noon on April 29 with a spot in the Fifth Place game at stake.

Meeting for the second time following a 9-3 regular season win by Princeton during league play at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium on Saturday, April 1, the Tigers came out of the gate hot and did not cool down until the final buzzer of the game.

Wan commenced the offensive onslaught nine seconds into the first quarter by burying a ball past Bucknell netminder Manuela Herrera (Jr., Windermere, Fla./Olympia) with 7:51 remaining in the opening eight-minute quarter to provide Princeton a lead it would never relinquish.

Eliza Britt (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) and Wan padded the margin to 3-0 with man-up strikes at 7:02 and 5:19, respectively, prior to Hannah Lapkin (Sr., Tustin, Calif./Foothill) and Chelsea Johnson (Jr., Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) cashing in on assists from Kelleher for six-on-six (1:28) and six-on-five (31 seconds) goals, respectively, to make it a 5-0 game.

Kelleher posted her third consecutive assist 49 seconds into the second quarter by dishing off a dime to Morgan Hallock (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) to conveniently store away a power-play point with 7:11 until halftime to make it 6-0.

The Bison broke through to shatter a shutout bid by Ashleigh Johnson with 5:10 on the clock as Tegan Stanbach (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif./Saint Francis) finished a pass from Emily Konishi (So., Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) to convert on an exclusion call against the Tigers and move within 6-1.

However, Princeton slashed Bucknell with back-to-back-to-back goals at 3:38, 2:36 and 1:42 as Britt blasted in a man-up chance, Kelleher connected on an even-strength opportunity and Lapkin lasered home a shot, respectively, to inflate the margin to 9-1.

Bucknell shrank the lead down to seven before the halftime horn as Marta Cosidine (Jr., Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) floated a ball into the cage with 1:16 remaining on the clock to make it 9-2 at intermission.

The Tigers went back to work in the third quarter to further pad the lead as Hallock hooked in a pass from Chelsea Johnson 64 seconds into the second half to make it 10-2 with 6:56 to go in the third quarter.  Konishi connected with Considine at 6:32 to get the goal back for Bucknell, but Kelleher countered with an unassisted marker at 5:12 to push the spread back to eight at 11-3.

Konishi dished out her second assist of the quarter at 4:54 by finding Stanbach for a power-play conversion, but Wan wheeled in a tally at 4:03, Britt found Maddy Damato (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif./El Toro) with a helper at 1:50 and Chelsea Johnson broke free for an unassisted score with 14 seconds remaining in the frame for 14-4 lead after 24 minutes of play.

Following 3:10 of scoreless play in the fourth quarter, Considine attempted to reinvigorate the Bucknell offense by swishing a shot at 4:50 to move the Bison back to within nine at 14-5.  The comeback bid would not hold water, however, as Natalie Grayson (Fr., La Jolla, Calif./The Bishops School) racked up an assisted goal (3:47) and Kelleher cashed in on a helper from Lapkin with 1:41 to go in keeping pace with Considine who found Shyla Lintz (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Konishi for power-play (2:26) and even-strength (1:41) markers, respectively, for the 16-7 final score.

Kelleher and Wan led the way for Princeton as eight players found the back of the cage, including six with multi-score outputs.  Chelsea Johnson, Lapkin, Hallock and Britt each compiled pairs of goals with Grayson and Damato chipping in solo strikes.

On the other end of the tank, Considine (three) and Stanbach (two) registered multi-goal contests with Konishi and Lintz tacking on single scores.

The combination of Herrera and Haley Derrod (Sr., Bonita, Calif./Eastlake) split time between the pipes in combining for six saves.  Herrera takes the loss as the goalie of record for allowing the goal that put Princeton ahead to stay.
