PRINCETON, N.J. — Kayla Yelensky and Kaila Carroll continued their impressive seasons with a combined five goals as the No. 9-ranked Princeton University women’s water polo team defeated the No. 21 Long Island University Sharks, 8-6, at DeNunzio Pool.
After LIU tied the game at one-all, Carroll and Yelensky scored on five-meter shots to give Princeton a 3-1 lead as the first quarter came to a close.
The Sharks tied the contest at three before Yelensky’s second tally of the contest put the home unit in front, 4-3, as the first half finished.
Goals by Kate Mallery and Rachael Carver extended the Princeton advantage to three, 6-3, with 5:22 to go in the third quarter, but two straight by LIU made it a one-goal affair, 6-5.
Yelensky and Shanna Davidson countered that run with goals to push the Tigers’ lead back to three with eight minutes left.
LIU registered one goal in the fourth quarter, but Lindsey Lucas had two of her six saves during that stretch as the Tigers took the 8-6 victory.
