BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) and Northumbria University, officially known as University of Northumbria at Newcastle, have partnered to provide varsity and collegiate club student-athletes the opportunity to continue playing while pursuing a quality academic program at the postgraduate level.

“I love the partnership we are establishing with Northumbria University,” stated CWPA Commissioner Dan Sharadin. “It is a complete win for both organizations, offering our athletes a chance to continue their education overseas at an affordable rate, while still getting to play at a highly competitive level.”

As a sponsor of the CWPA, Northumbria is attending the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club, CWPA Division III and CWPA Women’s Championships at Mt. Hood Community College (Gresham, Ore.), the David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center (Erie, Pa.) and Bucknell University (Lewisburg, Pa.) to provide information and discuss the opportunities for athletes at CWPA institutions to learn, travel and play water polo on the postgraduate level.  The partnership will continue into the men’s season with the Men’s Division III Collegiate Club, National Collegiate Club, Mid-Atlantic Water Polo and Northeast Water Polo Conference Championships.

“Northumbria University is very excited about our new partnership with the CWPA,” notes Katy Storie, Northumbria International Recruitment Manager.

“It offers a fantastic opportunity to better connect with water polo Student Athletes from Collegiate Club and Varsity backgrounds and share our unique combined athletic and academic graduate school offer for those exhausting playing eligibility within the United State.”

Student-athletes should be aware of several advantages regarding Northumbria:

  • Athletes are eligible for US Federal Loans of up to $50,000 to cover travel
  • No eligibility restrictions on playing a sport at graduate school
  • Academic & Athletic scholarships available ($3,300 guaranteed for GPA over 3.30)
  • Cheaper tuition than American/Canadian graduate schools & no Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required for entry

“The CWPA is a fantastic organization, providing excellent opportunities for student based competition and we see our partnership as offering additional benefits to its members.”
