Salem University-vs.-Monmouth College Scoresheet (Game 2)

ERIE, Pa. — Salvador Orozco (Jr., Commerce, Calif./Cerritos College) and Milos Popovic (Jr., Nis, Serbia/Gimnasium 9 May) both notched seven goals to share Player of the Game recognition as Salem University eluded Monmouth College, 25-10, in the opening round of the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)-West Region Championship hosted by Mercyhurst University at the Hallman Aquatics Center.

Salem, which advances to a 5:00 p.m. semifinal showdown against the victor of a first round game pitting Connecticut College against the host Lakers, never trailed in outscoring the Fighting Scots by tallies of 7-2, 7-3 and 8-2 in the first, second and third quarters, respectively, prior to staying even at three-all in the fourth quarter.

Monmouth, which falls into the consolation side of the bracket and will next be in action at 2:00 p.m. against Washington & Jefferson College in the first of a three-game round-robin series between the Fighting Scots, Presidents and the loser of the Mercyhurst-Connecticut game to determine Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Places, received five goals by Quentin Bartram (Fr., Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) to accompany a trio by Jesus Aguirre (Jr., Cicero, Ill./Morton East) and a pair from Alex Altamirano (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben Metro Science).

Goalie Kyle Jones (Fr., Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) took the loss with 16 saves for Monmouth, while Mateo Kozomara (Sr., Sarajevo, Bosnia/Maine East) was the victor with 14 stops for Salem.

Although the majority of the offensive fireworks belonged to Orozco and Popovic, seven other Tigers put away goals as Michael Rojas (So., Valle del Cauca, Cali, Colombia/Colegio San Joaquin Parroquial) chipped in three goals for a hat-trick, while Inigo Velasco (Sr., Madrid, Spain/Colegio San Agustin) and Mike Diaz (Fr., Visalia, Calif./El Diamante) deposited pairs of strikes.  Austin Kephart (Fr., Sanford, Fla./Seminole)Steven de Neergaard (So., San Antonio, Texas/Earl Warren), Uros Jevtic (So., Kragujevac, Serbia/Druga Kragujevac Gimnazija) and Alvaro Leon Parra (Fr., Cadiz, Spain/I.E.S. Pablo Ruiz Picasso) completed the scorers as the quartet each racked up a single tally.
