WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team dropped its weekend games to begin the season as the Lions fell to Gannon University, 22-11, and host Washington & Jefferson College, 19-11, at the W&J Invitational.
Facing the Division II Golden Knights, the Division III Lions fell behind 5-2 in the first quarter and trailed 11-3 by halftime. Both teams scored five times in the third quarter prior to Gannon expanding the final margin in the fourth quarter.
Karis Barth scored four goals for Penn State Behrend, while Makenzie Rickerd, Lauren True and Darragh Martin each added two goals to accompany a solo marker by Naomi Hays.
Facing the host Presidents in a non-conference game, the teams battled to a four-all tie after a quarter of action. However, Washington & Jefferson outscored Penn State Behrend 6-1 and 6-2 in the second and third quarters, respectively, to pull away by a count of 16-7.
Behrend chipped away at its deficit by outscoring W&J, 4-3, in the fourth quarter.
True and Barth posted three goals apiece and Hope Edwards added a pair.
