ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team fell to Grove City College, 12-11, and Mercyhurst University, 11-3, to conclude a weekend of women’s water polo competition at home in the Junker Center.

Against Grove City in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III league game, the Lions fell behind 2-0 quickly in the first quarter.  However, the team received back-to-back tallies by Kayla Scarpaci (Cypress, Texas/Langham Creek) and Emily McNaughton (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) to tie it up.

Trailing 4-3 at the end of the opening quarter as the Wolverines scored with just five seconds left in the frame, the Lions entered halftime with a 7-5 deficit.

Behrend pulled even at eight-all midway through the third quarter thanks to goals from Brooklynn Mocny (Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead), Scarpaci and Angela Laier (Lansing, Mich./Holt).

However, the Wolverines got the better of play the rest of the way in the third quarter to hold an 11-10 lead after 24 minutes of action.

Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter as Grove City held on for a narrow victory.

In game two, the Lakers of Mercyhurst built a 7-1 lead by the conclusion of the third quarter and never looked back to pick up an 11-3 victory.

Behrend’s opening tally came with three minutes remaining in the third quarter as Laier finished a pass from Sarah Mancebo (Tulare, Calif./Mission Oak).

The Lions received a pair of markers by Scarpaci over the final eight minutes, but Mercyhurst’s lead and offensive prowess were too much to overcome in the waning moments of the game.

Chloe Dodgen (Riverside, Calif./Hillcrest) tallied seven saves in goal to take the loss versus the Lakers.
