ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team competed in day one of the Behrend Invitational as the Lions fell to Mercyhurst Unviersity, 19-5, and Villanova University, 22-6.

Against Mercyhurst, Behrend came out strong to tie the game at one-all midway through the first quarter before the Lakers went on a six goal run.

Mercyhurst scored five goals in less than three minutes in the second quarter to secure a 9-3 halftime lead.

The Lakers took off in the second half, scoring 10 more goals.

Remy De Guzman (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) and Clare Jefferys (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) each scored two goals for the Lions, with De Guzman chipping in three drawn kickouts and Jefferys tallying one steal and one assist.

Alison McClure (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) finished the game with one steal, one assist, and three drawn kickouts. Lauren Wood (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) had a game-high four steals and five drawn kickouts

Facing Villanova, the Lions fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter before they scored their first goal.

The Wildcats scored 14 goals in the first half and eight in the second half.

Wood led the team with four goals, while Barbie Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) and De Guzman each chipped in one goal

Daniella Rios (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Sagrados Corazones), McClure, Cessar and Wood tallied one steal each.
