UTICA, N.Y. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo opened its 2021 season by taking down host Utica College, 13-15 and 16-5, in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III action at the Utica College Pool.
The Lions opened the first game with a 9-0 lead following the first quarter prior to expanding its margin to 12-0 by halftime.
The Pioneers outscored the Lions 5-1 in the second half but were unable to overcome the deficit as Penn State Behrend picked up a 13-5 victory.
Sarah Mancebo (Tulare, Calif./Mission Oak) led the way for PSB with two goals and one assist, while Kayla Scarpaci (Cypress, Texas/Langham Creek) and Emily McNaughton (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) each contributed one goal and two assists.
Chloe Dodgen (Riverside, Calif./Hillcrest) recorded the win in goal with three saves and one steal.
Penn State Behrend wrapped up the day with a 2-0 mark as the Lions topped the Pioneers, 16-5, in the late game.
Behrend took a slim 3-2 lead after the first quarter before outscoring the Pioneers 9-1 in the second quarter to hold a 12-4 lead by halftime.
The teams both netted pair of goals in the third quarter as Utica was unable to overcome Penn State Behrend over the final 16 minutes to suffer a second defeat.
Shannon Young (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) led the Lions with three goals and one assist, while Scarpaci chipped in three goals to match.
Viviana Euan (La Habra, Calif./Troy) and McNaughton each tallied two goals with Euan also contributing four assists.
Hope Nuzback (Erie, Pa./McDowell) got the win with seven saves in goal.
