FUKUOKA, Japan — Former Princeton University standout Ashley Guapacha ’15 (nee Hatcher) fired two shots and won a sprint during 25:33 to playing time as Argentina took a 12-9 setback against South Africa to conclude Group C competition at the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
Guapacha – who shot zero-for-one during a 27-1 loss to Italy prior to putting away one-for-three tries to score once and account for half of Argentina’s offense in a 21-2 loss to Greece in Argentina’s first two Group C games – and the rest of her homeland’s team finish fourth in Group C. Due to the 0-3 mark, the team falls into the consolation side of the bracket and will face Japan – which placed fourth in Group D against Hungary, Canada and New Zealand – at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on Friday June 21.
For South Africa, former Lindenwood University athlete Hanna Muller converted on one-of-two shots and field blocked a scoring try in 29:22 of action, while Bucknell University’s Boati Motau (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa/Roedean School South Africa) did not play.
Courtesy the victory – following prior Group C losses to Greece and Italy by 24-2 scores – South Africa takes third place in Group C and will return to the water at 5:30 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, July 22, against Group D runner-up Canada in the Round of 16.
