BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Princeton University alumna Ashley Hatcher ’15 will compete for the Argentina National Team at the 19th FINA World Championships in Hungary, on June 20 to July 3.
A 2015 graduate of Princeton and native of Miami, Fla., Hatcher will aim to aid Argentina into medal contention in what is believed to be the first women’s water polo appearance for the nation at the FINA World Championship. The team will compete in Bracket B and will begin competition on Monday, June 20, versus the Netherlands at 1:30 p.m. Eastern. On Wednesday, June 22, Argentina returns to the water to battle the Republic of South Africa at Noon prior to concluding the opening slate at Noon on Friday, June 24, against the United States of America. Placement in the group determines the schedule for further competition in the championship tournament.
The United States-vs.-Argentina game will pit Hatcher against one of her former teammates/fellow Princeton alum Ashleigh Johnson as the duo competed together for the Tigers in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
A member of Princeton’s 2012, 2013 and 2015 CWPA Championship teams, Hatcher compiled 202 goals, 67 assists, 85 steals and 16 field blocks over the span of 135 games for the Tigers.
Following a freshman season in 2012 which saw her compile 26 goals, six assists, 21 steals and 16 ejections drawn to aid Princeton in claiming the program’s first league crown in women’s water polo since 2000, she compiled 37 goals, 12 assists, 17 steals, six field blocks and 13 ejections drawn in 2013 as Princeton repeated as conference champion.
In the wake of a junior season in which she racked up 53 goals, 27 assists, 28 steals and 20 ejections drawn to aid Princeton to a runner-up finish at the CWPA Championship, she returned to the water in 2015 to claim All-CWPA First Team recognition for helping to its third league crown in four years with 86 goals, 22 assists, 19 steals and 23 ejections drawn.
