BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Princeton University’s Charlotte Valentine (So., Orakei, New Zealand/St. Cuthbert’s College) did not score in 2:20 of playing time as New Zealand tied the United Kingdom/Great Britain, 9-9, at the Taipei Songshan Sports Center in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) in both teams’ fourth game in Group A at the 29th Summer Universiade/University Games.
New Zealand needed to rally back in the game to collect a tie as the team fell behind 6-3 by halftime prior to clawing back with 3-2 and 3-1 scoring advantages in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Down 8-6 going into the fourth quarter and 9-7 with 5:53 left in the final frame, New Zealand pulled even with strikes at the 1:41 and six seconds marks to equal the British.
The result improves New Zealand to 0-3-1 in Group A play as the squad previously fell to Indiana University alum Shae Fournier (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Grant Park), current Hoosiers’ standout Kelly Matthews (Sr., Roxboro, Quebec, Canada/St. Thomas) and the rest of Team Canada by a 15-4 count on Friday, August 18. Further, the squad took a 14-10 loss against Japan on Sunday, August 20, and dropped a 23-3 contest against the Russian Federation on Tuesday, August 22.
New Zealand will next be in action to complete Group A play on Friday, August 25, against Hungary. The quarterfinals (Saturday, August 26), semifinals (Sunday, August 27) and championship (Tuesday, August 29) rounds are slated for next week.
