BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Goalkeeper Lindsey Lucas (Sr., Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) of No. 16-ranked Princeton University made 55 saves during a 3-3 California excursion for No. 16-ranked Princeton University last week to Claremont, Los Angeles and San Diego in claiming honors as the March 16 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Defensive Player of the Week.
The most decorated athlete in the history of men’s and women’s collegiate water polo for weekly laurels from a league with 22 Defensive Player of the Week (2023 – January 30, February 13, February 27, March 20, April 3, April 10, May 15; 2024 – February 12, February 19 March 4, March 18, April 1, April 8, April 15, April 29, May 13; 2025 – January 27, March 10, April 7, April 14, April 21; 2026 – March 16) and four Rookie of the Week (2023 – January 30, February 27, May 1, May 15) awards for a total of 26 accolades, she surpasses the record of 25 (19 Defensive Player of the Week, two Rookie of the Week, four Player of the Week) weekly awards claimed by CWPA Hall of Fame member/Olympic gold medalist Ashleigh Johnson ’17.
She opened the week with 18 saves and one goal allowed in a 12-1 victory at No. 25/Division III No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont on Wednesday, March 11, prior to stopping 13 shots in a 12-4 loss at No. 2 the University of California-Los Angeles in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 12.
At San Diego State University’s Aztec Invitational on Friday-Saturday, March 13-14, she accounted for 24 saves in a pair of games as the Tigers finished the weekend with a 2-2 mark.
On Friday, March 13, she swatted down 11 scoring attempts in a 12-10 loss to the No. 13/host Aztecs prior to not appearing in a 24-4 handling of Division III No. 7 Whittier College.
Following an 11-10 loss by Princeton to No. 12 Indiana University via a tank-length buzzer-beater, Lucas wrapped up the weekend on Saturday, March 14, with 13 saves in a 14-6 defeat of Pomona-Pitzer.
