OTOPENI, Romania — Princeton University goalkeeper West Temkin (Fr., Alamo, Calif./Campolindo) made five saves and fellow American Griffen Price turned aside three shots as the United States Men’s Junior National Team suffered a 12-6 setback versus Hungary in Group B action at the 22nd World U20 Championships in Otopeni, near Bucharest, Romania.
The Americans held their own against the Hungarians until the midway point of the first quarter as the United States fell behind 3-2 after the opening frame.
Trailing 2-0 three minutes into the contest, Hungary recovered from the early deficit to get on the scoreboard and move within 2-1. The tally ignited a furious scoring outburst by the Hungarians which ripped out nine additional tallies and held the United States in check for the next 18 minutes to snag 3-2, 6-2 and 10-3 leads at the conclusion of the first, second and third quarters, respectively.
Down 12-3 with 4:58 left in the fourth quarter, the Americans chipped their final deficit to a half dozen as tallies at the 3:20, 2:4 and 1:48 marks trimmed the final spread to 12-6.
The United States – which defeated Greece by a 13-10 count on Saturday, June 10, behind 10 saves from Temkin – will conclude its Group B competition on Monday, June 12, at 9:30 a.m. Eastern against Serbia – which downed Greece earlier today by a 14-12 count. Hungary – which downed Serbia by a 17-15 score on June 10 – will take on Greece on June 12 in the other Group B contest on June 12.
Crossover competition begins on Tuesday, June 13, prior to the quarterfinals on Thursday, June 15, and the title game on Saturday, June 17.
