BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Saint Francis University concluded its time at the 2024 Indiana Classic by coming up short versus host/No. 15-ranked Indiana University, 19-5, and Iona University, 10-8.
Saint Francis scored three goals in the second quarter against Indiana. Starting the quarter down 7-1, Sam Eschleman (Reading, Pa.) tallied the first goal in the quarter for the Red Flash with 6:04 left in the half. Caylah Olay (Redondo Beach, Calif.) netted a goal of her own with 3:23 remaining to make the score 9-3. Taking advantage of a turnover, Emese Szucs (Budapest, Hungary) scored with one second left in the second quarter to make the score 10-4 at halftime.
Leading by six entering the second half, Indiana scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter for a daunting 14-4 lead. Kimberly Frostad (Regina, Saskatchewan) found the back of the net in the fourth quarter for the Red Flash, but Saint Francis was outscored 5-1, ensuring a win for the host team.
The final game of the weekend for Saint Francis came down to the wire with the Red Flash trailing 8-6 going into the final frame against Iona. The Gaels struck first, but Kayla Rhoads (Oceanside, Calif.) responded to keep the game within two goals. With less than two minutes to go, Iona scored to extend its lead to three. After Saint Francis called a timeout with 10 seconds to go, goalkeeper Isabel Lumley (Brisbane, Australia) tallied a goal to make the final score 10-8.
The contest was nip-tuck in the first half.
With a little over two minutes to play in the opening quarter against Iona, the Red Flash outscored the Gaels by a 3-2 count to tie the game at three goals apiece. Georgia Ellison (Canberra, Australia) scored first for Saint Francis. Iona tallied one of their own, but Szucs responded 23 seconds later. Adi Garges (Perkasie, Pa.) scored to give Saint Francis the lead, but a goal by Iona tied the score going into the second quarter.
Olay led Saint Francis in scoring against Indiana with two goals. Against Iona, Rhoads and Szucs each tallied two goals to lead the Red Flash.
Lumley and Grace Raquel (Naperville, Ill.) shared time in net against Indiana, recording a combined 14 saves. Lumley was the lone goalie against Iona, earning nine saves.
