BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Marialena Seletopoulou (Fr., Glyfada, Athens, Greece/Yannopoulos School) of Saint Francis University scored 29 goals with five assists and nine steals in a 3-1 weekend for the Red Flash at the Mercyhurst University Invitational to claim both the February 19 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Player and Rookie of the Week awards.
Seletopoulou, who shared the February 12 Rookie of the Week award with George Washington University’s Alana Ponce (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) and Dara Bleiberg (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif./Royal), put any doubts about her candidacy for league honors to rest against the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Siena College on Saturday, February 10. She punched in seven goals in a 15-12 loss to the Keydets of VMI prior to notching four tallies in a 14-10 defeat of the Saints from Siena.
On Sunday, February 11, she wrapped up her weekend with an offensive onslaught by notching eight markers in a 15-14 victory over the St. Francis College Brooklyn Terriers prior to equaling the offensive output of her opponent with 10 scores in a 14-10 defeat of the La Salle University Explorers.
To date, Seletopoulou has 48 goals and eight hat-tricks in helping the Red Flash to a 5-3 record.
Last week, she began her intercollegiate career at the Bucknell University Bison Invitational by notching four goals against the host team (13-8 L), five versus Siena (12-10 W), four facing Gannon University (9-7 W) and six in a 21-13 setback against George Washington University.
