BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) offers condolence to the family and friends of former Michigan State University men’s collegiate club athlete Benjamin Daugherty.
A captain of the 2021 MSU squad, he claimed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship for leading the Big Ten Division Spartans to the National Championship with victories over Cornell University (12-5 W), the University of Colorado (16-11 W), the University of California (12-11 W OT SD) and the University of California-San Diego (12-11 W) at the Huntsville Aquatic Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The championship marked Michigan State’s second appearance at Nationals during his intercollegiate career as he helped the team to the 2019 Big Ten Division Championship and a Fifth Place finish at that year’s Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.
A 2021 All-America First Team honoree, he claimed three All-Big Ten honors during his time in East Lansing, Mich., with Second (2018, 2019) and First (2021) Team recognition. The 2020 season was not contested due to the cancellation of the season brought on by the outbreak of COVID-19.
Michigan State water polo was a family tradition as he became the third member of the Daughertys to captain an MSU water polo team following in the footsteps of his brother, Austin (2014) and sister, Sarah (2019).
