BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Former St. Francis College Brooklyn men’s water polo players – Andras Kercsmar ’00, Tamas Katona ’01 and Peter Golopencza – played for Team Hungary at the 2017 World FINA Masters Water Polo Championship this month in Budapest, Hungary.
“It was a fantastic competition,” said Kercsmar. “There were 7,000 spectators at some of the games and the entire event was televised live. “Can you imagine a 40+ water polo game with a full house? It can only happen in Budapest, the center of the water polo world.”
The Terriers’ group was mentored by Kercsmar’s father, Andras Kercsmar Sandor, who played a large role in convincing the guys to enter the competition. Kercsmar Sandor has helped many of the former St. Francis Brooklyn players who hail from Hungary over the years.
“The experience was unbelievable,” Kercsmar added. “There were many tough teams from all around the world and a good deal of them had former Olympic players. “Many of them were medal winners in Sydney, Athens and Peking.”
Kercsmar still follows the Terriers all the way from Eastern Europe.
“I absolutely follow the SFC water polo team and I check the results on the home page, the players and still cheer for the program. We will never forget the warm welcome that our coach Carl (Quigley) provided us. The experience of studying and playing at SFC is something that we’ll never forget. We thank him for making it possible.”
