BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — United States Military Academy Professor/Professor of Mechanical Engineering/men’s water polo Officer in Charge Col. Michael Benson ’94 received the 2022 Coach Mike Krzyzewski Award for Excellence in Teaching Character Through Sport for his role as the water polo team’s OIC.
The award recognizes West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership.
Commissioned into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers following graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1994, Benson holds Masters (2003), Engineer, and Doctorate (2011) Degrees from Stanford University, all in Mechanical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri, and a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.
An Academy Professor, he currently serves at West Point as the Director of Mechanical Engineering in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department at the academic rank of Professor in Mechanical Engineering.
His research interests include developing and using novel diagnostics for quantitative measurements of velocity, concentration, and temperature fields in technical flows using Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems. In addition, he is active in research in the gas turbine engine field, atmospheric boundary layers, and in external ballistics, along with engineering education.
