BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Freshman Sofie Pontre (Perth, Western Australia/Santa Maria College) scored three times with two assists and eight steals in a 3-2 weekend for No. 8-ranked the University of Michigan at the University of California-Santa Barbara Winter Invitational on January 20-21. For her performance, she garners notice as the January 22 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Rookie of the Week.

She made her biggest impact on the defensive end of the tank by starting all five games at center defender and holding four nationally-ranked teams to five or fewer goals – including the No 4 and 5 teams in the country.

Although only on Michigan’s campus for three weeks after joining the Wolverines during the holiday break, she racked up a goal, an assist and four steals in a 14-5 defeat of No. 23 California State University-Northridge.  Further, she added a goal with an assist in an 11-4 victory over No. 17 University of California-San Diego to accompany a score in a 5-3 loss to No. 5 Arizona State University.

Further, she collected pairs of steals versus No. No. 4 University of California-Los Angeles (5-4 L) and No. 14/host UCSB (10-7 W).
