BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Freshman Sofie Pontre (Perth, Western Australia/Santa Maria College) registered three goals, three assists and six steals during a 5-0 weekend for No. 9-ranked University of Michigan at home in Canham Natatorium during the Wolverine Invitational to collect laurels as the March 5 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Defensive Player of the Week.

A two-time weekly honor recipient from the league office following recognition as the January 22 CWPA Division I Rookie of the Week, Pontre helped the Maize & Blue limit their opponents to 26 goals over five games while also chipping in three of Michigan’s 70 goals in the same span.

Following a 17-6 defeat of No. 19 California State University-Northridge in the host team’s opener on Saturday, March 3, she punched in a goal to help the Wolverines top No. 15 Long Beach State University, 7-6.  Pontre concluded the day with thre steals in a 15-6 victory over Azusa Pacific University.

On Sunday, March 4, she posted a goal, two assists and three steals in a 14-5 defeat of Bucknell University prior to netting a goal and an assist to help down Iona College, 17-3.
