BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — For the third time during the 2019 season and the second consecutive week, Abby Andrews (Fr., Indooroopilly, Australia/Brisbane Girl’s Grammar School) of No. 8-ranked the University of Michigan is the best first-year athlete in the league as she notches the February 11 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I Rookie of the Week award.

The January 21 and February 4 CWPA Division I Rookie of the Week, Andrews helped led the Wolverines to a Third Place finish at the University of California-San Diego’s Triton Invitational over the weekend as the Maize & Blue toppled No. 21 California State University-Northridge (14-5 W), No. 9 Arizona State University (6-5 W) and No. 6 University of California-Irvine (9-8 W) with a 10-3 loss to No. 1/defending National Champion the University of Southern California.

Andrews opened the tournament by chipping in a goal with two assists and three steals in sticking the Matadors of CSU Northridge prior to forking in two goals, two assists and three steals in a 6-5 quarterfinal defeat of the Arizona State Sundevils.

She tacked on an assist and a steal in a 10-3 loss to USC as the Wolverines fell to the Trojans for the second time in 2019. Overall, Michigan – which previously fell by a 9-2 deficit to USC on January 19 in Santa Barbara – hold the closest margin of defeat against the Trojans (seven goals) matched only by No. 3 the University of California-Los Angeles which dropped a 10-3 decision in the Triton Invite title game.

Facing UC-Irvine in the Third Place game, Andrews dominated play by recording six points on three goals and three assists.
