BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — University of Michigan water polo student-athletes Abby Andrews (Fr., Indooroopilly, Australia/Brisbane Girls Grammar School) and Sofie Pontré (So., Perth, Western Australia/Santa Maria College) combined for three goals and an assist in Australia’s final two games at the 2019 World University Games in Naples, Italy, to help their homeland garner a Fifth Place finish.
Australia earned a spot in the Fifth Place game on Friday, July 12, by dispatching China via a 12-7 score on Thursday, July 11. In the contest, Andrews scored twice and Pontré netted a solo marker as the duo combined for a quarter of the Aussies’ offense.
In the Fifth Place game versus Japan on Friday, July 12, Andrews scored once as Australia rallied back from a 6-3 halftime deficit by tallying 4-1 and 4-3 scoring advantages in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to claim an 11-10 victory.
