ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan water polo student-athletes Abby Andrews (Fr., Indooroopilly, Australia/Brisbane Girls Grammar School) and Sofie Pontré (So., Perth, Western Australia/Santa Maria College) were two of 13 athletes named recently to the Australia World University Summer Games roster.

The World University Summer Games will take place July 2-14 in Turin, Italy.

Andrews competed for Australia at the Youth World Championships last year before enrolling at Michigan in January. She went on to have a freshman season during which she set rookie records of 70 assists and 126 points. She was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Rookie of the Year and CWPA Rookie of the Tournament and earned second team All-CWPA honors.

Pontré, a Perth, Australia, native last competed for Australia at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Volos, Greece. She heads into her junior season at Michigan having compiled 37 goals and 31 assists in 70 games in her first two seasons while serving as the team’s center defender.

The two Australians will join Michigan teammate Ava Morrant (Fr., Maple Ridge, B.C./Maple Ridge Secondary), who was named to Canada’s World University Games roster last month, in Turin.
