BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of Michigan’s Maddie O’Reilly (Sr., Villanova, Pa./Episcopal Academy) was named to the 2021 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division I Academic All-America® Women’s At-Large Team.
The 2021 Academic All-America® Men’s and Women’s At-Large Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom. The program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.
The At-Large Program includes athletes from the following women’s sports: beach volleyball, bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.
An All-District 5 First Team selection from all Division I teams in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, the senior attacker and Sport Management major is a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and has earned academic honors from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) during each of her four intercollegiate seasons.
A 2021 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America selection with a Second Team selection, she was named the CWPA Player of the Year and CWPA Championship Most Valuable Player. The team captain helped lead Michigan to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament and a No. 7 final ranking, also while leading the team with 47 goals, 33 assists, 21 steals and 11 field blocks in 2021.
O’Reilly will return to Michigan in the Fall as a graduate student for her final season of eligibility following an undergraduate career in which she tallied 120 goals, 90 assists, 29 drawn exclusions, 57 steals and 22 field blocks in the span of 101 games over four seasons.
All current dues-paying group and individual members of CoSIDA have the opportunity to vote on the Academic All-America® teams within their division (NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA). Members of the Academic All-America® Core Committee, the CoSIDA Board of Directors and CoSIDA staff members vote for teams in every division.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games to be eligible. In addition, no student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
O’Reilly is among four water polo athletes to garner Academic All-America recognition joining Johns Hopkins University’s Jayden Kunwar (Division III Third Team), the University of California-Los Angeles’ Nicolas Saveljic (Division I First Team) and Stanford University’s Tyler Abramson (Division I Second Team).
Her selection marks the 14th award presented to a CWPA institution in women’s water polo as she becomes the 11th female athlete to earn the prestigious award in the history of the league.
