BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of Southern California will serve as host for the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s Water Polo Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 11-13, at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Featuring eight teams, including the victors of two play-in games, the tournament could feature the automatic qualifiers from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference (GCC), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) and three at-large selections.  The at-large selections are made without geographical restrictions using the NCAA’s established selection criteria of:

  • Head-to-head competition
  • Results versus common opponents
  • Rating Percentage Index (RPI)

If the evaluation of the primary criteria does not result in a decision, the secondary criteria will be reviewed:

  • Last season performance  – defined as the last 10 games including conference championship tournaments
  • The RPI consists of three factors that are weighted as follows:
  • Factor I: Winning Percentage (25 percent)
  • Factor II: Opponents’ average winning percentage (50 percent)
  • Factor III: Opponents’ opponents’ average winning percentage (25 percent)

Once the teams are selected, the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Committee will seed the top four teams using the criteria listed above.

The play-in games will occur on either Saturday, May 5, or Tuesday, May 8, at the championship site (USC) or a location determined by the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Committee.  The victors of the play-in games will advance into the championship bracket at USC on Friday, May 11.

Fans should be aware that the NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championship is a one-and-done tournament as winners advance to the next round with the fallen concluding their season.
