BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — A revised schedule for the 2021 Winter Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference-Western Region is now available.

Competition begins on Friday, February 5 at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa., as the Presidents host Salem University at 7:00 p.m.  The action moves south of the Mason-Dixon Line on Saturday, February 6, as first-year program Mount St. Mary’s University welcomes Gannon University and Mercyhurst University to Emmitsburg, Md.  Mount St. Mary’s will take on Gannon (10:00 a.m.) and Mercyhurst (4:00 p.m.), while the Golden Knights and Lakers square-off at 1:00 p.m.

A week later, Salem welcomes McKendree University, Mount St. Mary’s, Washington & Jefferson, Gannon and Mercyhurst to the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va., for a nine-game weekend on Friday-Sunday, February 12-14.

Following a cat-fight pitting the host Tigers against the Bearcats of McKendree at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, February 12, action continues on Saturday, February 13, with McKendree-vs.-Washington & Jefferson (1:00 p.m.), Salem-vs.-Gannon (3:00 p.m.), Washington & Jefferson-vs.-Mount St. Mary’s (5:00 p.m.), Gannon-vs.-McKendree (7:00 p.m.) and Salem-vs.-Mount St. Mary’s (9:00 p.m.).  Sunday, February 14, brings the final three games with Mount St. Mary’s-vs.-McKendree (10:00 a.m.), Mercyhurst-vs.-McKendree (1:00 p.m.) and Salem-vs.-Mercyhurst (4:00 p.m.).

The regular season comes to a close on Saturday, February 20, at the David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa., as Washington & Jefferson travels North to meet Gannon (1:00 p.m.) and Mercyhurst (4:00 p.m.).

A week later,  the MAWPC-West Championship occurs at the Hallman Aquatics Center as Gannon, McKendree, Mercyhurst, Mount St. Mary’s, Salem and W&J battle in nine game weekend on Saturday-Sunday, February 27-28.

The champion and runner-up from the MAWPC-West Championship advance to the seven-game MAWPC Championship on Satuday-Sunday, March 6-7, at Lejeune Hall on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy against Fordham University, Iona College, La Salle University of the Eastern Region-Northern Section along with defending MAWPC Champion Bucknell University, George Washington University and the host Midshipmen of the Eastern Division-Southern Section. Seeding for the MAWPC Championship will be conducted via a poll of the league’s Governance Council.

The victor of the MAWPC Championship earns an automatic bid to the Winter 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship slated for March 18, 20 and 21 on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.  A finalized format for the NCAA Championship is pending as the Golden Coast Conference, MAWPC, NWPC, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) were all awarded automatic bids for a six team championship.  However, both the NWPC and SCIAC have elected not to compete in conference schedules and the Golden Coast Conference does not meet the minimum number of teams to retain its bid, dropping the championship field down to three bids (MAWPC, MPSF, WWPA).  A determination from the NCAA regarding the championship field – with the potential for an at-large team to earn a spot – is pending.
