WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Utica University water polo team finished its weekend trip to Pennsylvania by suffering setbacks versus host Washington & Jefferson College, 13-3, and Penn State Behrend, 17-4, at Henry Natatorium.
In Utica’s opening game of the day, W&J found the board early and often to put up 10 goals between the first and second quarters combined. The Pioneers scored twice in the third quarter. However, the Presidents matched the Pioneers’ goal total over the second half by netting three of their own to claim a 10-goal victory.
Shayla Seymour (Uxbridge, Mass./Blackstone Valley Regional), Kelly Waryncia (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Bailey Simmons (Vernon Center, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) recorded goals for Utica, while Madison West (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) assisted on two of them. Hope Millets (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and Amelia Laible (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) led the team with three steals.
Goalkeeper Kim Serio (Lakeville, N.Y./Livonia) recorded six saves.
In the Pioneers’ weekend finale, Penn State Behrend posted a six-goal first quarter to pull ahead to stay. Utica scored twice in the second quarter, while Behrend chalked up five more for an 11-2 lead by halftime. The Pioneers were bested 6-2 in the second half as the Lions rolled to a 17-4 victory.
West scored twice for the Pioneers. Seymour recorded one goal on two shots and Sar Kuiken scored on her only attempt. Kira Seaman (Fort Edward, NY/Hudson Falls) led the team with two assists.
In cage, Serio made eight saves to take the loss.
