ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Division III No. 8-ranked Macalester College water polo team lost their first game of the season against the Virginia MIlitary Institute tonight, 14-7. Hosting the Macalester Invitational at Riley Pool, the Scots faced the Keydets, a Division I team, in the opening game of the invite.

The Scots kept the game close in the beginning as VMI lead just 3-2 in the first quarter, with senior Lucille Moran (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) scoring as well as junior Naomi Strait (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton). Moran scored two more goals in the second, but VMI continued to outscore the Scots and the second quarter ended in favor of the Keydets, 6-4.

The Scots’ defense made it difficult for VMI in the third quarter as they scored just two more goals and Moran picked up her fourth score of the night. But the Keydets ran away with the game as they outscored Macalester 6-2 in the final quarter with Moran and junior Oriana Galasso (Gresham, Ore./Central Catholic) each putting away shots for Macalester.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Overland (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) made 10 saves for the Scots.
