PRINCETON, N,J, — The Wagner College men’s water polo team dropped both games at day one of the Princeton Invitational on Friday, September 9, as the Seahawks fell to No. 18 St. Francis College Brooklyn, 13-8, and the host/No. 10 Tigers, 13-10.
Facing the Terriers of SFC Brooklyn, Wagner fell behind 5-4 lead after the opening eight minutes. Freshman Lazsio Strasser tallied two out of the four goals for Wagner in the first quarter.
St. Francis Brooklyn put a stamp on the contest in the second frame by outscoring Wagner 4-0 to take a 9-4 lead into the second half.
In the second half, both teams tallied four goals each. For Wagner, Strasser tallied one goal along with sophomore Mattia Bognolo. Senior Olivér Fodor netted two goals in the fourth quarter.
Along with his two goals, Fodor posted one assist to go along with six exclusions drawn. Sophomore Adam Wuthrich stopped six shots in goal for Wagner in the second half.
Taking on the homestanding Tigers in the nightcap, Wagner could not overcome Princeton.
In the opening quarter, the Tigers outscored the Seahawks, 4-2. Junior Zsombor Gyémánt racked up both goals for Wagner in the first eight minutes of competition.
Gyémánt and Fodor both notched goals to level the game at four-all in the second quarter. However, Princeton concluded the first half with a 3-1 run to hold a 7-5 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
Wagner again opened the third quarter on a 2-0 run behind goals from Strasser and Mattia Bognolo to balance the scoreboard at seven-all. Similar to the conclusion of the second quarter, Princeton went on a 2-0 scoring run to close out the third frame and claim a 9-7 lead heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.
The Tigers closed out the game with a 4-3 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter. Senior Karl Lovett, Fodor and Strasser accounted for the Seahawks’ offense in the closing minutes of the contest.
Strasser finished with a hat trick (three goals) to go along with three assists and two exclusions drawn. Fodor also racked up a hat-trick and drew three exclusions, while Gyémánt posted Wagner’s third hat trick.
