STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College men’s water polo team picked up victories against Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) opponents Mount St. Mary’s University, 18-12, and George Washington University, 15-11, at the Spiro Sports Center. The Seahawks improve to 14-11 in the regular season, and 5-3 in conference play.
Facing Mount St. Mary’s to start the day, Wagner jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play. Junior Kyle Chambers, sophomore Laszlo Strasser, senior Barnabas Vidovics and junior Mattia Bognolo were responsible for the Seahawks’ points of the opening frame.
Bognolo found the back of the net once again in the second quarter. The Australian native was joined by freshman Vince Varga and sophomore Eliot Alvarez in the scoring column. Alvarez punched in a pair in the second quarter, bringing Wagner’s lead to 8-4.
The Green & White spread the wealth in the third quarter, as five different Seahawks scored. Chambers, Strasser and Varga all found their second, with Bognolo completing his hat-trick during the frame. Junior Kristian Stanczewski tallied his first of the game during the quarter as well.
Bognolo continued to pour it on by netting his fourth and fifth strikes of the game during the final quarter. Chambers chipped in his own hat-trick to the game’s totals prior to freshman Maayan Nahari added the cherry on top to lift the Seahawks over the Mountaineers, 18-12.
The Seahawks closed out the day by stopping George Washington.
After one quarter of competition, Wagner and George Washington were knotted up at four-all. Chambers registered two goals during the quarter to accompany solo tallies by senior Zsombor Gyemant and junior Luis Camino Sosa .
In the second quarter, the Seahawks acquired some separation from the Revolutionaries, as Strasser scored his first of the game, and senior Ryan Lanier notched two goals from in-front of the net to give Wagner a 7-5 lead entering halftime.
Wagner outscored George Washington 6-5 in a back-and-forth third quarter. Chambers racked up goals number three and four during the third frame, with Strasser adding his second of the competition. Vidovics etched his name in the scorecard with his own goal, along with Bognolo and graduate student Ben Zovickian.
The Green & White maintained their lead during the final frame of play to hold off George Washington.
