BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The 2021 Wagner College men’s water polo schedule is set per head coach Ciaran Wolohan.
The 2021 season commences at the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University on September 4-5. The Seahawks will play three matches on opening day against St. Francis College Brooklyn, followed by Santa Clara University and concluding against the host Bears. The Bruno Classic finishes up on Sunday with tilts versus Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The next weekend sees the Green & White make the trip to Princeton, N.J. for the Princeton Invitational on September 10-11. Wagner will take on California Baptist University and Iona College on Friday, and wrap up the two-day invite against Harvard.
Wagner will then head down to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bison Invitational hosted by Bucknell University. Following a non-conference contest against Salem University on September 18, the Seahawks open Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action against the host Bison. MAWPC play resumes on Sunday morning for the Seahawks as they will square off against Fordham University before wrapping up the weekend by facing Mercyhurst University.
“I am very excited for the season after not playing for more than 18 months,” said Wolohan. “We have a large and very talented incoming class and a strong core group of upperclassemen which I am looking forward to working with and coaching. We have a long and difficult schedule coming up, which starts with five games in two days the first week at the Bruno Classic.”
Wagner will play two of three conference matches on the campus of Princeton to close out the opening month of action. On September 25, the Seahawks face the United States Naval Academy in MAWPC play before taking on the host Tigers in a non-conference affair. Wagner concludes the weekend against Bucknell.
October finds the Seahawks heading to the West Coast for the Gary Troyer Tournament, running from October 1-2. Wagner opens Day 1 of the tournament against Santa Clara University and Whittier College. The Green and White will wrap up their California excursion with games against Chapman University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
Wagner returns to the friendly confines of the Spiro Sports Center on October 9 as the teams will host Mount St. Mary’s University and George Washington University in a pair of conference games.
Following the short home-stand, the Seahawks hit the road once again, heading to the Harvard University Invitational on October 16-17 in Cambridge, Mass. The Green & White will tangle with Connecticut College and the host Crimson before wrapping up play against MIT and Brown.
Wagner will end October with a pair of road tilts at Fordham (October 22) and St. Francis Brooklyn (October 23) before welcoming Johns Hopkins University (October 30) to Grymes Hill.
The final four games of the 2021 regular season pit Wagner in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area, as they will take on Navy and Johns Hopkins on November 6 in Annapolis and Baltimore, Md., before closing out the year against George Washington and Mount St. Mary’s in Washington, D.C. and Emmitsburg, Md.
The MAWPC Championship is scheduled for November 19-21 at Navy’s Lejeune Hall with the victor claiming the league’s automatic berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship field. The last time Navy hosted the MAWPC Championship in 2017, Wagner advanced to the title game prior to falling by an 8-5 score to George Washington.
