BRONX, N.Y. — Wagner College goalie Cameron Woldt (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Serra) made 13 saves and Jasmin Kolasinac (So., Belgrade, Serbia/King’s College) scored four times to share Player of the Game honors as the Seahawks topped host Fordham University, 10-6, in the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship Third Place game at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center.
Wagner, which finished as the runner-up at the 2017 MAWPC Championship hosted by the United States Naval Academy after placing Fifth in 2016 at Bucknell University, never trailed against the Rams by opening up a 1-0 lead and holding advantages of 2-1, 4-1 and 8-3 at the conclusion of the first, second and third quarters prior to being outscored by Fordham 3-2 in the fourth quarter for the 10-6 final score.
For the Seahawks, Devin O’Donnell (Sr., Pointe-Claire, Quebec/Selwyn) added three goals, while Vuk Bulajic (Fr., Belgrade, Serbia/King’s College) stuffed in a pair. Lachlan Trabinger (Jr., Canberra, Australia/St. Edmunds College) completed Wagner’s with a solo strike.
On the home side of the tank, Magnus Sims (Sr., Wayne, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Dimitris Koukias (Fr., Athens, Greece/Athens-Psychico) both found the back of the cage twice to accompany single goals by Tristen Knoflick (Jr., Concord, Calif./De La Salle) and Samuel Varshisky (Sr., Greenwich, Conn./Stanwich). In cage, Patrick Coffey (Sr., West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep (Loyola Maryland)) closed out his intercollegiate career by stopping eight shots in taking the loss.
Trailing 2-1 after the first eight minutes of action and 3-1 13 seconds into the second quarter, Fordham was never able to cut its deficit below two from the second quarter on as the Seahawks kept the Rams in check throughout the entire contest in the rubber-match between the two programs.
During the regular season, Wagner and Fordham split their meetings with the Seahawks claiming a 13-4 victory and the Rams taking a 14-10 win.
For Fordham, which hosted a conference championship water polo tournament for the first time since the 1988 Metropolitan Championship and an aquatics championship for the inaugural time since the 1994 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships, the Fourth Place finish continues a trend of high marks in the MAWPC as the team placed Fifth (2009), Eighth (2010), 11th (2013) and Ninth (2014, 2015) at the Eastern/Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship prior to a Third Place finish at the 2016 MAWPC Championship at Bucknell and a Fourth Place mark in 2017 at Navy
