PRINCETON, N.J. — The Wagner College men’s water polo team ran its winning streak to three games as the Seahawks defeated No. 14-ranked California Baptist University, 14-12, and New York in-state rival Iona College, 20-13, on the opening day of the 2021 Princeton Invitational hosted by Princeton University at DeNunzio Pool.
Taking on the nationally ranked Lancer of Cal Baptist in the first game of the invitational, three goals from both junior Oliver Fodor and sophomore Zsombor Gyemant propelled the Seahawks to the win.
The Green & White trailed 6-3 at the half before a seven-goal performance in the third quarter. In all, the Seahawks outscored the Lancers 11-6 in the final 16 minutes.
Sophomore Ethan Zirh started his sixth consecutive game to begin the season, he blocked 12 shots while recording a steal in the contest.
Freshman Mattia Bognolo continued his strong start to his Wagner career as he recorded two goals and three steals in the victory.
Wagner controlled the night cap by outscoring the Gaels of Iona, 12-5, after the first 16 minutes, including 8-3 in the second quarter.
Senior Vuk Bulajic contributed five goals for Wagner, while freshman Andrew Cowie completed his first collegiate hat trick in the victory.
Fodor continued his rapid start to the season as he concluded the day with 29 goals in six games for the Green & White. Fifth-year Jack Leighton contributed across the stat sheet, recording a hat trick and winning three sprints.
