GROVE CITY, Pa. — A six-goal fourth quarter powered the the Washington & Jefferson College women’s water polo team to a 16-13 victory at Grove City College for the Presidents first win of the 2021 season.
The Wolverines defeated the Presidents, 16-15, in W&J’s season opener, but Washington & Jefferson picked up the victory in the rematch at Grove City.
Tied at 10 going into the fourth quarter, the teams were tied at 12-all midway through the fourth quarter. Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored a go-ahead goal with 3:27 left in regulation and Marissa Whitby (Los Angeles, Calif./Eagle Rock) extended the Presidents’ lead to 14-12 with 2:12 remaining.
Grove City closed the gap to 14-13 with 1:44 to play, but Allie Dombkowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored twice in the final 90 seconds to secure the 16-13 victory for W&J.
The game was close throughout as it was tied at four after the first eight minutes. W&J held a 7-6 halftime lead before the Wolverines battled back to tie the game going into the fourth quarter.
McClellan and Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) led the way with four goals apiece. Whitby and Alyssa Broach (Caledonia, Mich./East Kentwood) each had three scoring tallies and Dombkowski added her two fourth quarter goals.
Cecelia Weiss (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) earned the victory in the net for W&J. Weiss made 12 saves and recorded three steals.
