GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Wheaton College women’s water polo team was lifted by a pair of goals from first year Claudia Gagné (Orlando, Fla.), but ultimately fell to Washington & Jefferson College, 15-8, on the campus of Grove City College.
Wheaton falls to 0-10 on the season, while the Presidents improve to 5-3 on the year.
Gagné led the Lyons with two goals, while six other Lyons added goals in a show of roster depth. First year Avary Guge (Winchester, Calif.) maintained her hot streak with a goal and three assists, while junior Sophia Romo (Jupiter, Fla.) added a goal and an assist. First year goalkeeper Anduena Kraja (Chicago, Ill.) had another strong day between the posts, making 15 saves, one steal and two assists. Sophomore Mackenzie Kirby (Blue Ash, Ohio), sophomore Ryanna Ritting (Perkasie, Pa.), senior Issabel Babikova (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore Fiona Swift (Red Hill, Pa.) were the other goal scorers for Wheaton.
The Lyons were able to stay within reach of the Presidents in the first quarter, scoring two to the crimson-clad side’s four. Wheaton repeated their offensive output in the second quarter, scoring twice. The Presidents were able to score three more goals, erasing Wheaton’s effort to take a 7-4 lead into halftime.
Wheaton was outscored five to one in the third quarter, putting them behind the Presidents even further. They were able to post three goals in the fourth quarter, their most of the game, but the Presidents responded with three of their own. Washington & Jefferson took the win, 15-8.
