GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Washington & Jefferson College women’s water polo team opened the 2023 season this weekend at the Grove City College Invitational. W&J dropped a 15-10 decision on Friday, February 24, versus Wittenberg University in non-Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III league action before falling to Division II Salem University, 17-7, and Gannon University, 19-14, on Saturday, February 25.

Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the team on offense with 14 goals in the three games. McClellan had six goals in the loss to Wittenberg. Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) a pair versus the Tigers. 

Neumann finished with a team-high three goals versus Salem. McClellan added in a pair of scores. Mekkiye Ergun (Chicago, Ill/Lake View) and Kate McKiernan (Columbus, N.J./Pennington) tacked on solo markers against Salem. W&J trailed 4-1 after the first quarter, 7-3 entering halftime, and 12-5 at the conclusion of the third quarter before falling by a 17-7 final score.

McClellan registered a team-high six goals in the weekend finale versus Gannon. Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) notched five strikes against the Golden Knights as W&J trailed 6-1 after the first quarter and 11-7 by halftime. The Golden Knights stretched the lead back to six at 18-12 after three before finishing off the 19-14 win.
